Improving Patient Confidence and Comfort Treating DED with Envision

Improving Patient Confidence and Comfort Treating DED with Envision

Dr Shaina Zheng, a Gold Coast optometrist, has been a leading advocate for addressing Dry Eye Disease, a common condition with ongoing, long-term effects, that impacts millions of people around the world. Knowing that it’s experienced as something more than simple irritation, she emphasises how dry eyes can affect everyday patient’s mental health, confidence and overall wellbeing. Consistent dry eye can affect the ability to work, drive, and get through basic daily tasks.

According to Dr Zheng "Eye comfort can influence how we feel, work and interact with others. Caring for your eyes isn’t only about vision. It’s also an important part of overall wellbeing”.

Dry Eye Disease (DED) is often undiagnosed or treated topically, rather than at the root cause. InMode's Envision multiplatform offers a dedicated suite of devices that are changing the way optometrists approach eye health. Instead of simply using drops to lubricate the eyes, it has a unique, multi-layered approach to actively improve the condition with its cutting-edge technology. Envision offers a long-term solution for patients who struggle with the discomfort of dry eyes and offers results that were previously not attainable.

Understanding Dry Eye Disease and Its Impact

Thousands of Australians deal with the consistent irritation and discomfort caused by DED, with acute cases including symptoms like burning, stinging, blurred vision and a feeling of something foreign in their eyes. When working on screens or having exposure to environmental pollutants and irritants, symptoms can worsen throughout the day. Things like pollen, air conditioning and eye strain all contribute to exacerbating the irritation and not only do these physical symptoms affect how people feel, but they can actively inhibit their ability to go about daily life.

InMode's Envision multi-platform is changing the way doctors, including Dr Zheng, treat this under-diagnosed issue. Comprising three innovative technologies, Envision combines gentle radiofrequency (RF) and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies to provide a unique approach to managing dry eye, ocular rosacea, Demodex mites, droopy eyelids and other eye surface concerns.

The focus behind creating Envision was to treat the cause of eye dryness, which can be caused by various factors but typically stems from the same root issue: poor meibomian gland function. These glands surround the eyes and the edge of the eyelids and aid in tear production.

When these glands are blocked or ineffective, it leads to poor tear quality and can result in an imbalance between the oil to water ratio needed for good eye health. The oil to water ratio is often impacted, meaning the water evaporates quickly and the lack of oil leaves the eyes feeling dry and scratchy. By improving tear quality and gland function, Envision helps patients achieve long-term relief from dry eye symptoms.

The Science Behind Envision

Forma-I is the first line for MGD and Demodex Mites. Lumecca-I is second in line  to treat ocular rosacea and rosacea and Morpheus8 to treat droopy eyelids that affect vision.

Forma-I, Morpheus8, and Lumecca- I are all designed to treat the key issue of DED: Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), ocular rosacea, Demodex mites and poor tear production. Forma-I is the first in line for meibomian gland dysfunction and mites, while Lumecca-I is used for rosacea and ocular rosacea, while Morpheus8 is designed to improve the condition of droopy eyelid tissue that affects the patient’s vision. This combination of IPL, radiofrequency, and superficial microneedling can transform how a patient's eyes feel.

Dr Zheng has incorporated Envion’s technology into her clinical practice, and has seen first hand the positive impact of this advanced technology.

“This type of treatment is designed to address the underlying glands, rather than only managing surface symptoms,” she says. “Many people describe a noticeable sense of relief afterwards, which can make a meaningful difference in their day-to-day comfort.”

More Than Just a Physical Issue

While the effects of dry eye disease are ongoing and can lead to secondary complications like eye infections due to insufficient eye lubrication, it goes beyond pain and discomfort. Consistent pain and irritation leads to emotional distress as well, with many patients feeling misunderstood because their condition is invisible to others.

Dr Zheng's clinic, Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach, is helping change the conversation around dry eye care by highlighting the importance of empathy when treating patients who suffer from chronic eye discomfort.

Rather than a topical, short term solution like eye drops that need to be applied throughout the day, Envision represents a holistic and targeted approach to managing dry eyes. It combines the science of advanced technology with compassionate patient care. “Supporting patients to feel more comfortable and energised again is one of the most rewarding parts of my work” Dr Zheng notes.

National Awareness Campaign

InMode Australia, in partnership with Eyecare Plus Mermaid Beach, have launched a national education campaign to raise awareness about dry eye disease and how Envision can help. We do this in the hopes of doing more than simply promoting new treatments, but to shed light on the emotional toll that chronic eye discomfort can take on individuals.

Dennis Cronje, Managing Director of InMode Australia, stressed the importance of this campaign:

“We’re proud to support eye health professionals like Dr Zheng who lead with both science and compassion. The Envision Platform represents a breakthrough in non-invasive care, but it’s the empathy and expertise of practitioners that truly make the difference.”
